Before The Fall

Ninety years ago, as the month of June 1916 began, residents of Crockett, Valona, Selby and Port Costa looked forward to the anticipated joys of the coming summer season. The John Swett Senior Class dance and entertainment held at the Crolona hall on Loring was, according to the weekly Signal, “a big success.” The John Swett champion baseball team ended its season by winning every game against other schools in the county league. In honor of the champions, the student body gave the team a banquet at the Venus CafĂ©. The newspaper reporter, in the paper’s June 2nd issue, wrote “Crockett is certainly invincible when it comes to sportsmanship, or anything else for that matter, where skill and endurance is concerned.”
